Marketing 101 for Small Business Owners: Strategy, Plan & Tools Explained
Learning the ins and outs of marketing for a small business or nonprofit is crucial. Having a clear understanding of how to acquire customers, satisfy them, and retain them can take a business from 0 clients to being fully booked.
I get it...when you’re the only person running your business, it can be difficult to find the time to really study what this means. But if you do not plan to hire someone to do this for you, there is no way around the NEED to prioritize it. Marketing can not only help stabilize your business, but also grow it as well.
Because I get these questions A LOT, I wanted to break down what marketing is beyond the “I post 3 times a day on Facebook” mindset.
This article will help you understand:
What is Marketing?
Marketing is how businesses and organizations let people know they exist and show them why they need them. It involves everything from acquiring, satisfying, and retaining customers.
Marketing is about:
Attracting the right people
Helping them understand what you offer
Giving them a reason to choose you
And keeping them coming back
If people don’t know you exist… they can’t support you.
I’m also noticing that a lot of business owners think posting on Facebook multiple times a day is sufficient marketing. OR they’re overwhelming themselves trying to be on every platform, but only halfway showing up.
Effective marketing includes:
A strategy
A plan
An understanding of your target audience
Clear objectives
The right marketing channels
And having analytics set up
Because if you don’t have a strategy behind your marketing… you’re just moving with no direction. So let’s break down what a marketing strategy actually is.
What is a Marketing Strategy and why is it needed?
Most business owners make the mistake of just jumping straight into posting, promoting, and selling without a strategy or a plan. They sign up for every platform and then struggle to stay consistent or up to date on trends. And then wonder why nothing is working. Ehhh.....
Every business and organization needs a marketing strategy.
It’s what gives your content direction instead of you just posting and hoping something sticks. It requires research, goal-setting, and correct positioning and outlines how your business or organization will achieve its marketing objectives. It’s not just “I’m going to post today.”It’s the thought process and structure behind why you’re posting, who you’re talking to, and what you want to happen from it.
Before you can build a strong marketing strategy, you have to understand your business first. You need to be clear on:
Who you actually serve
What problem do you solve
Why should someone choose you over someone else
A lot of people skip this part and jump straight into posting… and that’s why their marketing doesn’t connect. Your strategy is what forces you to slow down and figure this out.

At its core, a marketing strategy includes:
Identifying your target audience
Understanding their problems
Positioning your business
Choosing where to show up
Deciding how to convert them
Your strategy should answer these questions:
Who are you trying to reach? Not everybody. Be specific. Who actually needs what you offer?
What problem do you solve? People are not just buying products or services… they are buying solutions.
Where are you showing up? You don’t need to be on every platform. You need to be where your audience already is.
How are you turning viewers into customers? Once someone sees your content… then what? Are they booking? Messaging you? Clicking a link? There needs to be a clear path.
Without a strategy, your marketing will feel like:
Posting without direction
Inconsistent results
Confusion about what’s working
Wasted time and energy
And that’s where a lot of businesses get stuck.
A strategy gives your marketing structure.
It makes sure everything you’re doing actually connects and leads somewhere.
Because at the end of the day…the goal isn’t just to be seen. It’s to turn visibility into results. 😮💨 Once you map out your marketing stratgey you need to create a marketing plan.
What Is a Marketing Plan?
Once you have your strategy, you use it to create a marketing plan. This is where things get detailed. Alot of people confuse a marketing strategy with a marketing plan. They are not the same thing. A marketing strategy is the plan behind everything. A marketing plan is the execution. This is where you take everything you just mapped out and actually put it into action.
A marketing plan is a detailed document that outlines a business's advertising strategies, goals, and tactics to reach target audiences, drive sales, and achieve business objectives over a specific period of time.
Your marketing plan outlines:
What content are you posting
What platforms are you using
How often are you showing up
What campaigns are you running
What actions do you want people to take
This is where your marketing becomes consistent and intentional instead of random.
Because now you’re not just waking up thinking: “what should I post today?” because you already know.
Your marketing plan should include things like:
Content topics
Posting schedule
Platforms you’re focusing on
Campaigns or promotions
Calls to action (what you want people to do)
This is also where you start paying attention to what’s working and what’s not.
Because a plan isn’t just about doing…it’s about tracking and adjusting. Everything going through your marketing channels should be working towards the objectives you created.
Without a plan, even with a good strategy, you’ll still feel unorganized. You’ll:
Skip days
Post inconsistently
Forget what you’re promoting
And miss opportunities to convert people into customers

Marketing Vocabulary You Should Know
Now that you understand the basics… let’s go over some terms you’re going to hear A LOT when it comes to marketing. Because if you don’t understand the language, it’s going to be hard to create a strategy or a plan.
Terms to know:
Lead: A lead is someone interested in your business.
They haven’t bought yet… but they’re paying attention.
Conversion: This is when someone takes action.
They go from:
Viewer → Customer
Follower → Booking
Click → Purchase
Engagement: Likes, comments, shares, saves. This shows people are interacting with your content.
Reach: How many people actually saw your content?
Funnel: The process someone goes through before they buy from you.
Example: They see your post → follow you → click your link → book
A lot of people get overwhelmed hearing these terms… But in reality, you’re already doing some of this, you just didn’t know what to call it.
CTA (Call To Action): This is what you’re telling people to do. If you’re not telling people what to do… they’re not going to do anything.
Examples:
“Book now”
"DM me”
"Learn More"
"Call Now"

The goal isn’t to use everything…It’s to have systems in place so you can stay organized, track what’s working, and grow. Because if you’re not tracking it… you’re guessing.

Start Mapping Out Your Marketing

This is where everything starts to come together. Because having knowledge is one thing…but applying it is what actually gets results. What's the point in reading this article and not taking any action? Here are some questions to help you start mapping out your marketing strategy.
Who is your target audience?(Be specific. Who actually needs what you offer?)
What problem do you solve?(What are you helping people fix, improve, or achieve?)
Where are you going to show up?(1–2 platforms to start. Don’t try to be everywhere)
What type of content will you create?(Educational, promotional, behind-the-scenes, etc.)
What action do you want people to take?(Book, DM, click a link, sign up, etc.)
How will you track what’s working?(What numbers are you paying attention to?)
Don’t worry about having it perfect.
The goal is to go from: guessing to knowing what your plan is.
