Finding Peace in the Grind: Achieving Work-Life Balance as a Business Owner

Balancing discipline and dedication to my work with knowing when to put it down and switch into mommy or wife mode is a skill that took me years to master. 😮😬 ⚖️

It wasn't easy, but it was necessary. Running multiple businesses means my to-do list is always long, and my kids often catch this view — me deep in work mode, iPad in hand, completely locked in. But they also see something just as important: when we pull up to the baseball field, I’m fully present. I’m watching. I’m screaming. I’m cheering. I’m recording. Mama bear mode is activated. 🐻❄️
A couple of weeks ago, my kids and I had a conversation about the importance of putting in the work to perfect their skills and knowing the difference between taking a break and procrastinating. It went a little something like this:
"Do you see how much I’m at my desk?" / "Yes, Mommy."
"Do you see how happy I get when something I’m working on blows up or does what it needs to do?" / "Yes, Mommy."
"Do you see how when something isn’t working or doing what I need, I vent to Daddy but then spend hours at my desk getting it right?" / "Yes, Mommy."
"Do you hear or see how I always have a podcast or video playing? Or how I say I have a class or webinar about to start?" / "Yes, Mommy."

🔑 The lesson?
When you’re passionate about something and want to grow, you have to invest time into perfecting it. Build your skills. Educate yourself. Put in the work. It will never be perfect, but if you don’t put in the time, it will never grow either.
But there was one more thing I had to make sure they understood.
"Do you see how Mommy will work for days straight and then take a couple of days off?" / "Yes, Mommy."
Because rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. 🫡 We recharge our devices, so why wouldn’t we recharge ourselves? You have to give your muscles a break. Let your energy build back up. Reconnect with your people. Read a book. Spend time doing a hobby just for fun. 🎨
Tips for Finding Work-life Balance
If you’re juggling multiple roles, here are a few tips to help you find that sweet spot between hustle and rest:
Set Clear Boundaries: Define your work hours and stick to them. When it’s family time, be fully present.
Prioritize Your To-Do List: Everything doesn’t need to be done today. Tackle high-priority tasks first and let the rest follow. (Buy a planner cough, cough)
Schedule Rest Like It’s Work: If it’s not on the calendar, it often doesn’t happen. Block out time for rest and fun.
Learn to Say No: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Protect your peace by only committing to things that align with your priorities.
Involve Your Family: Let your kids see how hard you work, but also let them see you rest. Teach them balance by modeling it.
Unplug Regularly: Social media and emails can wait. Take intentional breaks from screens to reconnect with yourself and those around you.
As a business owner and a parent, I’ve learned that balance isn’t about giving equal time to everything; it’s about being fully present in whatever moment you’re in. When it’s time to work, I’m locked in. When it’s time to support my family, I’m all in. And when it’s time to rest, I don’t feel guilty about it anymore.
